In my neck of the woods, it is officially Spring, and this means baseball season! My son had his first practice/game where he met his teammates and coach. Orange team shirts and the kids aptly named themselves the orange jays. Classic. Now to think up a cheer…
Not sure if any of you other momma’s out there are into their kids baseball or any other organized sport, but it can be a pretty hard thing to watch. Kids swinging at 10 balls and not hitting one, or countless amount of balls going right passed them or over their glove. At least they are learning right?!
Regardless, by nature, baseball is a long sport and I’ve decide to prioritize my time when I’m at the field (which will be Monday and Wednesday nights!) Its a 2.5 hour outing and I have his two sisters and dog in tow. The girls are easy because they love to play at the park and being 5, they have a new air of independence about them. So, it’s my time to get a workout in. I’m already outside at the park (my daily dose of fresh air therapy) with green space, benches and playground equipment to toy around on.
I started by doing a few laps of the field and on my 3rd lap, my one daughter came running over and asked to join in. We ran two laps together! I then did 3 exercises in a circuit format. Squats, lunges, plank walks. Sprint, jog and repeat. My girls joined in for a few of these exercises and I threw the ball for my dog in between my squats and she ran around with me. I would say I multitasked the shit out of that time at the park! I was proud of myself because it would have been way too easy to pull up a chair and chill with the other parents, but it was a priority for me to get moving and to be honest, I had more than enough social time afterwards. I actually met another mom who commented on my workout by saying ‘ Nice work! We have to get our workouts in when we can right?’ YES!
After the practice/game was over, the kids are provided with a snack. Each week a parent brings enough for all the kids. I had a flag go up inside as we are trying hard to live plastic free and of course the snack was a giant box of individually wrapped granola bars and yogurt tubes! I cringe inside, but I was so proud of my son because he came running back and said “Mom, I only took the granola bar because I didn’t want to make double the waste.” Fair.
I breathe a sigh of relief and feel good about what values I’m instilling into my kids. I forget that they are growing up and becoming their own little beings and I was so proud of my 7 yr old. Now, if only I can get the parents to provide orange slices, watermelon and cucumbers…
“Hey Mom, can I play at the park for 5 minutes?” Where do they get their endless amounts of energy and how can we tap into it?!
